What Is GST and How Does It Work? A Complete Guide
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a broad-based consumption tax applied to most goods and services at each stage of the supply chain. Unlike older sales tax systems that taxed at multiple levels (causing tax-on-tax), GST uses an input tax credit mechanism that allows businesses to claim credits for GST already paid on inputs, so the tax is ultimately borne only by the end consumer.
Over 160 countries have adopted some form of GST or VAT (Value Added Tax). This guide covers the GST systems in India, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand โ the four countries supported by our free GST calculator.
How to Calculate GST: The Two Formulas
There are two common GST calculations:
1. Add GST (Exclusive to Inclusive)
When you have a base price before tax and need to find the GST-inclusive total:
GST Amount = Base Price ร (GST Rate / 100)Final Price = Base Price + GST AmountExample: A product costs โน10,000 before 18% GST.
GST = โน10,000 ร 0.18 = โน1,800
Final Price = โน10,000 + โน1,800 = โน11,800
2. Remove GST (Inclusive to Exclusive)
When you have a GST-inclusive total and need to find the original base price:
Base Price = Total Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100)GST Amount = Total Price โ Base PriceExample: A receipt shows $115 including 15% NZ GST.
Base Price = $115 / 1.15 = $100
GST = $115 โ $100 = $15
India GST: Slabs, Structure & GST 2.0 Reform
India introduced GST on July 1, 2017, replacing 17 central and state taxes. Following the GST 2.0 reform in September 2025, the slab structure was simplified from 5 slabs to 4:
| Slab | Rate | Applies To |
|---|---|---|
| Exempt | 0% | Essential food staples, life-saving drugs, educational materials |
| Low | 5% | Everyday consumer goods, agricultural products, healthcare equipment |
| Standard | 18% | Most goods and services (majority of items previously at 12% and 28% merged here) |
| Luxury / Sin | 40% | Tobacco, aerated beverages, luxury cars, betting and gambling |
India's GST is further split into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) for intra-state transactions, or IGST (Integrated GST) for inter-state transactions. The total rate remains the same โ for example, 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST.

Canada GST/HST/PST: A Provincial Breakdown
Canada's sales tax system is uniquely complex because it combines a federal GST (5%) with varying provincial taxes:
| Province | Tax Type | Combined Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta | GST only | 5% |
| British Columbia | GST + PST | 12% |
| Manitoba | GST + RST | 12% |
| New Brunswick | HST | 15% |
| Newfoundland & Labrador | HST | 15% |
| Nova Scotia | HST | 14% |
| Ontario | HST | 13% |
| Prince Edward Island | HST | 15% |
| Quebec | GST + QST | 14.975% |
| Saskatchewan | GST + PST | 11% |
| NWT / Nunavut / Yukon | GST only | 5% |
In HST provinces (Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, PEI), the federal and provincial taxes are combined into a single Harmonized Sales Tax collected by the CRA. In other provinces, the PST/RST/QST is collected separately by the provincial government.

Australia GST: How the 10% Rate Works
Australia has had a flat 10% GST since July 2000. It applies to most goods, services, and imports. Key exemptions include:
- GST-free: Basic food, most health and medical services, education, childcare, exports
- Input-taxed: Financial services, residential rent โ no GST charged but no input credits available
Businesses with annual turnover of $75,000 or more ($150,000 for non-profits) must register for GST. Registered businesses charge 10% GST on taxable supplies and can claim input tax credits for GST paid on business purchases.

New Zealand GST: The Broadest in the World
New Zealand's 15% GST is notable for having very few exemptions โ making it one of the cleanest and broadest consumption taxes globally. Key features:
- Exempt: Financial services, residential rent, donations
- Zero-rated (0%): Exports, international transport, supply of a going concern
- Everything else: 15% โ including most food, clothing, electronics, and professional services
Businesses with annual taxable supplies over NZ$60,000 must register for GST. Returns are filed two-monthly, six-monthly, or monthly depending on turnover.

GST vs VAT vs Sales Tax: What's the Difference?
These terms are often used interchangeably, but there are structural differences:
- GST (India, Canada, Australia, NZ, Singapore, Malaysia): A multi-stage consumption tax with input credit mechanism. Tax is collected at each supply chain stage but only the value added is effectively taxed.
- VAT (EU, UK, China, South Africa): Functionally identical to GST. The name "Value Added Tax" is more common in Europe. The UK's standard VAT is 20%, the EU averages 20-27%.
- Sales Tax (US states): Charged only at the final point of sale to the end consumer. No input credit mechanism. US states range from 0% to 10.25% combined rates.
The key advantage of GST/VAT over sales tax is self-policing โ each business in the chain has an incentive to ensure the previous business charged and remitted the correct tax, because their own input credits depend on it.
How to Calculate GST for Business Invoices
If you're a business issuing invoices, here's how GST typically works:
- Determine taxability: Is the good/service taxable, exempt, or zero-rated in your jurisdiction?
- Apply the correct rate: In India, identify the HSN/SAC code to find the applicable slab. In Canada, determine whether HST or GST+PST applies based on the customer's province.
- Show GST separately: Tax invoices must show the GST amount as a separate line item. In India, CGST and SGST (or IGST) must be shown individually.
- Claim input credits: GST paid on business inputs can be claimed as Input Tax Credit (ITC), reducing your net GST liability.
Our GST calculator handles the math for step 2 โ but always verify the applicable rate for your specific product or service category.
Common GST Exemptions by Country
| Category | India | Canada | Australia | NZ |

| Education | 0% | 0% | GST-free | 0% |
| Financial services | 18% | Exempt | Input-taxed | Exempt |
| Residential rent | Exempt | Exempt | Input-taxed | Exempt |

Frequently Asked Questions About GST Calculations
To remove GST from a total (inclusive) price, divide the total by (1 + GST rate). For example, to find the base price from an AU$110 total with 10% GST: $110 รท 1.10 = $100 base price. The GST component is $110 โ $100 = $10. Our calculator's "Remove GST" mode does this automatically.
Following the GST 2.0 reform effective September 2025, India uses a simplified 4-slab structure: 0% (essentials), 5% (everyday goods), 18% (standard rate for most goods and services), and 40% (luxury and sin goods like tobacco). The previous 12% and 28% slabs were largely merged into 18% and 40% respectively.
GST is the 5% federal Goods and Services Tax that applies across all of Canada. HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the federal GST with a provincial component into a single tax in Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia (14%), New Brunswick (15%), Newfoundland (15%), and PEI (15%). In non-HST provinces like BC and Quebec, the provincial tax (PST/QST) is collected separately from the GST.
It varies significantly. In India, most basic food staples are exempt (0% GST). In Canada, basic groceries are zero-rated. In Australia, basic food is GST-free. However, in New Zealand, food is taxed at the full 15% GST rate โ NZ is one of the few countries that applies GST to basic food without exception.
In Quebec, you pay 5% federal GST plus 9.975% Quebec Sales Tax (QST), totaling 14.975%. Unlike HST provinces, these are calculated separately. On a $100 purchase: GST = $5.00, QST = $9.975, Total = $114.975. Our calculator shows this breakdown automatically when you select Quebec.
For intra-state transactions (buyer and seller in the same state), GST is split equally into CGST (Central) and SGST (State). For example, 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For inter-state transactions, the full rate is charged as IGST (Integrated GST) โ e.g., 18% IGST. The total tax rate is the same; only the collection mechanism differs.
This calculator applies the standard GST rate you select. However, many products and services have specific rates, exemptions, or zero-rating that differ from the standard rate. For India, the rate depends on the HSN/SAC code. For Canada, some items are exempt from PST in certain provinces. Always check the applicable rate for your specific product or service category.

You must register for GST if your annual taxable turnover exceeds: India โ โน20 lakh (โน40 lakh for goods-only in most states). Canada โ C$30,000 over four consecutive quarters. Australia โ A$75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits). New Zealand โ NZ$60,000 in any 12-month period. Below these thresholds, GST registration is optional.
Nova Scotia reduced its HST rate from 15% to 14% effective April 1, 2025. This reduced the provincial component from 10% to 9%, while the federal GST portion remained at 5%. The change was implemented to provide tax relief to residents. Our calculator already reflects this updated 14% rate.
